These girls are tough!!
Here's another effect of climate
change: Prolonged drought coupled with the growing use of public lands by off-roaders
means that soil erosion and dust pollution will only grow worse to threaten
water supplies in the West, a federal expert said at a Senate hearing. With
off-road use more than 400% larger than it was 25 years ago, (I think thats a
little low), and the NFS and the BLM now restricting use on our public lands, it
seems ridiculous to me that we are now the cause of all the problems. Granted
there are a few that will just rip the land up, but then again, There are more
that abide by the rules. With no increase in the use of our public lands on the
horizon, maintaining the lands currently available to us is critical. As you all
know we are always under extreme scrutiny, regulation and enforcement at almost
every area we ride in. So, when I see a story that says.. we are virtually
unregulated (untrue), are the cause of drought due to soil erosion, (???not!),
Riding in undesignated areas, (they have already begun to close trails and areas
off), And just basically trashing the off-road users in general, I have to
say something. Thankfully we at least have Sen. Larry Craig on out side who
said:
Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, cautioned against restricting public land access to off-roaders, of which only a minority could be considered bad apples.
"We have those lands also for the purpose of recreating on them and enjoying them, not just to view them from afar as if they were a museum piece to be constantly coddled and protected," Craig said.
Thank you Sen Craig. and you should read the story here.
As a sidenote, on the same link is another sidebar story of Nevada and the use of trails and ATV registration. The Nevada responsible trails Alliance says:
"
Federal fight brewing over public lands. Well, this could go with the above story, but here the feds just can't get along. With all the different agencies that control the access to our public lands they just can't seem to agree on how to best come to agreement on how to limit our use. With the increase in popularity of our sport, Adjust the lands to accomodate the percentage of users is the best way. Hikers, Bikers, Horses, and OHV users all get a percent. Hmmmm... Great Idea!! check out the story by going here.
Riverside County Cracking down. With a restrictive county noise ordinance now in effect, combined with trespassing, dust control and other laws, there are few areas where it is legal to ride anymore. Now with private property use also being looked at to restrict, the Riverside county elected officials have truly gone off the deep end.
Recently, while riding with friends in the Homeland Hills area on trails he thought were owned by the federal Bureau of Land Management. Sheriff's deputies approached riders with guns drawn ordering them to the ground. The deputies had been trying to pull them over, but the riders didn't realize it because of the noise from their bikes. Obviously.
"I'm glad I didn't have my kids with me," one rider said. "It was like I was an armed robber or something."
One weekend last month, a sheriff's deputy fired several shots at a pair of fleeing off-roaders along the north shore of Canyon Lake. They were in the midst of some 30 people spending the day in the hilly area popular among riders. Sheriff's officials said the two men had been riding illegally. Now I don't know about you, but the officers should never fire unless under imminent danger of physical harm. These officers should be fired and jailed for putting people in harms way. What a bunch of jerks. What would you do If a ranger killed your kid?? They need some serious retraining over there. Totally out of control!!!!! The story is
here.BLM easement granted Just wanted to take a moment and say thank you from all of us riders that use the off-road areas to Redding resident Dave Frase. Mr Frase was kind enought to donate a 3 mile long easment across his property, to connect to trail systems in the Shasta OHV area. Even if ATV's are not allowed, that is a gesture that all of us can appreciate. With people like him around, we all benifit. Shake his hand if you know him, and say thanks from all of us!!
Manufacturer news. Yamaha gets an award!! Yamaha's Raptor 250 and 250SE recently won the consumers digest best buys in the Sport ATV category. Finally a 250 is out that can be competitive. An entry level sport competive ATV in my opinion is a good thing. Gives the kids a better place to start riding. The story is here.
Suzuki puts out its 250,000 ATV!!! That's alot of quads!! This is just from the Georga ATV plant here in the U.S. Congrats!! full story. They also won the FIM cross country world championship!! Over in the Middle East this is a 6 day cross country event. Check it here.
