Cow Mountain Ride Review
This was our first trip to cow mountain so far. We had tried on previous occasions to go, but due to rain in previous days it was closed. According to their policies there can be no noticeable precipitation for 72 hours and then they do a field survey to see if they can re-open. Go figure.
We came to cow mountain via Scotts Valley Road out of Lakeport, which in itself isnt a bad road at all. Very thin towards the end where it reaches Cow mountain and I was a little worried about running into another trailer coming out, but didn't. To get in from that side you have to cross scotts creek, which is a large dry creek bed. Or at least it was dry when we were there. It looks like it can get big though.
After we arrived and unloaded to take our first ride, we went up and down the creek looking for a way over the mountain and didnt find one. The creek bed just got extremely rocky and stuff, good for a 4x4 quad. It sucked for our sport quads, except for a few spots. After doing the creek for a few hours, we did find the road over the mountain right by our truck, so off we went.
At this point I must say we had a map and thank god for that. If you go, get a map. The trails are either not marked or marked so you dont know which trail the sign is for or just nor marked.
The trails were very dusty of course when we went, but the ones we did get to do were really fun. Had some great jumps like steps going up or down hills and winding through trees. Very fun. If you stay on the main roads anyone can ride there, if you go down some of the trails they get pretty rutted out from bikes so we did have a tough go of it at times.
All in all a great ride, we didnt get to do very much of it due to the sun going down, but We will be going back soon. I really liked it.
One more thing to remember is that it is on public lands so people will be there shooting. It dosen't bother me at all, most people are responsible shooters and have a good backstop. Just be aware of it.
